“back-to-school” jitters

Posted on: August 28th, 2011 by Kathleen No Comments

two years ago i made the best decision of my life by applying to design school. interior design/architecture has always been my “dream job” and due to the timing of me graduating (during the worst economic recession in a century) i went out on a limb and made it reality.

graduate school is so gratifying – especially design school. it is the most liberating form of education i’ve ever experienced. the ‘A’ goes to the student who defies the professor the most. it goes against every bone in my uber-rational body, and i love it. at 25 years old i am more inspired, creative, and imaginative than i was at 10. in many ways i feel like i am a little kid again. my “back to school list” includes: markers, colored pencils, and elmer’s glue. during the semester i never leave home without my tackle box of goodies and am “one” with my sketch book.

"Back to School"(bags packed and ready to go)

as i prepare myself for school tomorrow, i am simultaneously nervous and excited. this summer has been incredible – i got married to the boy down the street in june, and have had the great fortune to spend most of my time traveling and relaxing with him. however, i’m ready. i feel like the nerdy kid who can’t wait to get back into the classroom. a 25 year-old nerdy kid… that’s about right.

i can’t wait to share all of my work with you this semester!

with love,

kathleen

“one person’s trash is another person’s treasure”: frames

Posted on: August 26th, 2011 by Kathleen 1 Comment

in our last post, ashley briefly introduced you to the horrors and thrills of junkyarding. while for some of you, swimming your way through a sea of doors, rusty metal, and glass is not your ideal way to spend a friday afternoon, it’s definitely our’s.

junkyarding is addicting – the new tlc special premieres this fall, replacing “hoarding”. i think the only reason jon (my hubs) hasn’t kicked me out yet is the incredibly low cost (an afternoon at mr. brown’s junkyard is much cheaper than lunch at panera) unfortunately, our garage is quickly filling and i’m running out of space for me to hide my addiction from him!

one of the many things that caught my eye while perusing the yard were these frames:

i live in a townhome and i have an awkward block of bare wall underneath one of the staircases. when you enter my home you see this bare space immediately before walking upstairs to my main floor. this is what i’ve come up with:

i paired my junkyard frames with a couple extras i had laying around my house to fill the boring, bare space. i love the visual interest the frames add.

ash and i left with a LOT of gems last week – hope you aren’t bored with our junkyard posts yet!

lots of love,

kathleen

“one person’s trash is another person’s treasure”: lamps

Posted on: August 25th, 2011 by Ashley 1 Comment

as a mother, i get the privelage of dragging my daughter (sequoia ruby) anywhere i want to go. i am obsessed with thrifting – some call it ADD (my husband being one), but i love the thrill of a day’s worth of entertainment for next to nothing.

my favorite part of my new business partner kathleen is that i can call her at 7:45 in the morning and say:

“we’re going to the junkyard today.”

and she replies:

“i’ll bring the coffee.”

so last friday we headed to our favorite junkyard. i mean, come on, who else do you know with a “favorite junkyard”? (at this point kathleen and i are on very personal terms with the owner mr. brown…)

after wandering the “yard”, we filled our truck – all for under 40 bucks. you know you have ecclectic taste when a junkyard owner questions your mental stability and asks:

“what are you gunna do with this sh*t?”

but i knew this was a diamond in the dirty, rotten, rusty, rough:

i thought it was a great deal for 25 cents – especially when they work and turned out like this:

while we may always leave questioning our last tetanus shot; our hearts and trunks are very full.

until next time,

ashley

Fabulous Finds: operation build a light fixture

Posted on: August 19th, 2011 by Ever Thine Design No Comments

here at Ever Thine Design, we are constantly scouring the internet for creative inspiration. we follow an infinite amount of amazing design blogs, but jenny from Little Green Notebook always seems to get us motivated.

our latest endeavor was taking on this challenge. jenny (we imagine we’re close friends) made it seem like making this chandelier was a walk in the park. for us it was more like running a marathon, in a hurricane, while wearing high heels… they’re up and we are very pleased with the results.

we started by purchasing this ikea lamp.

we followed jenny’s “simple” directions and voila!

(kathleen chose to paint her’s copper)

(ashley painted her’s silver)

while we won’t be attempting more of these anytime soon, we could not be happier with our new light fixtures! they add a fun retro feel to our homes, all for under $70! can’t beat that!

with love, kathleen and ashley
